Here's a copy of the latest version of AltWDEF, 1.5.3.
It replaces your standard window look with a much more customizable
one, one which includes an extra box next to the zoom box which
_shrinks the window to an icon_. Pretty spiffy. If you are familiar
"Alex's WDEF" in WindChooser 1.12, then take my word for it as the
author of the WindChooser cdev that this is much much better.
It should take care of any bugs you have found and surprise you
with some new options as well.
I had promised a number of people that AltWDEF was submitted to
comp.binaries.mac months ago, and it was, but it took till now
to appear. Thanks God for info-mac's archiving of files -- any
hideous commercial demos that appear don't cut down on the volume
of the rest of the software traffic.

Apollo 1.0
==========
Enclosed is the latest version of Apollo, the launching utility. Apollo will
launch applications, desk accessories, control panels and documents and will
open folders. Multiple combinations of any of these can be launched with a
single menu selection. Each application can have its own settings for screen
depth, sound level, default folder (for the Open and Save dialogs) and
default document.
Apollo also has facilities for switching between applications using either a
menu or a key combination. A second key combination hides the current
application as it is switched out. Certain applications and INITs can be
excluded from either or both of the menu and keyboard rota. The switching menu
contains window submenus for each running application.
Apollo will run on any Mac from the Plus upwards, under any system above 4.1.
Some features, however, require system 7.
This submission also contains Apollo Localiser, which will translate Apollo
from English into French, German, Japanese, Dutch or Swedish, and Apollo
Converter, which copies settings from previous versions of Apollo (0.5 to 0.8)
into version 1.0.
Full documentation is included in English. Quick introduction chapters are
included in French, German, Japanese, Dutch and Swedish.
Previous beta versions have been well received:
"check it out soon" (BYTE, May 1992) and
"this beta version works excellently" (Dutch MacWorld, October 1992)
This is Applicon 2.3, an upgrade to Applicon 2.2 and earlier versions.
Applicon is a utility for System 7. It places a
"tile" on your desktop for each running application listed
under the Application menu. Each tile displays the icon and
name of "its" application. Clicking the tile brings its
application to the front, the same as if you'd selected that
app from the Application menu. Option-clicking will hide the
current app's windows before bringing the selected app to the
front.
Applicon is nice because you can see what's running without
pulling down a menu, and because the tiles are easier to manage
than menu items: you don't have to stop and read, and you don't
have to be too precise with the mouse.
This release, version 2.3, fixes a few bugs and introduces three
new features, including an option to "Always Hide Others."
All users are recommended to upgrade.
Applicon is a fully compatible System 7.0 application that shows
how some things that used to require INITs can now be done with
a small app. You can launch Applicon at any time, but it's most
convenient to simply drop it into your Startup Items folder
inside your System Folder. It features full on-line help,
including Balloon Help. Applicon requires System 7.0 or later.
It is free.

***THIS IS A WONDERFUL UTILITY!!!***
Async Family is a set of applications and one extension. Actually, this
last one is not a real extension, it's a background application. This
means it will not have the usual conflict problems INITs have.
Well, Async family makes your Mac beep and play sounds Asynchronously,
i.e. you don't have to wait for the sound to be finished playing before
you can get back to work!
You'll be able to install 5-minute sounds in your System and use them as
System beeps!
Drop Mr.Player and Mr.Beeper in your system folder, select a new system
beep (a LONG one) in Mr.Beeper's control panel and restart your Mac… All
your system beeps will be asynchronous, and if you have a Mac with the
Apple Sound Chip (all Macs but the 68000-based have it) you'll hear more
than one beep at a time. You may also drop AIFF and System 7 sound files
on Mr.Drop to play them while you keep working (multi-megabyte files can
be played without any trouble).

Attention 1.0.2 is a little control panel that lets you
customize the sound played when background applications need
your attention (technically speaking, when they post

You also have options to disable notification sound altogether,

Many users on the net have complained that "Colors" and "Kolor" don't
work right under System 7. A good alternative is Aurora.
Aurora is System 7 compatible Control Panel (cdev) that lets you change
the colors used to draw your windows, controls (normal buttons, scroll
bars, check/radio buttons), and menus. Ever wanted puce scroll bars?
Now's your chance! Ever wanted a mauve menu bar? No problem! Its
also very easy to do. Choose your color from the standard Apple color
wheel, and you're off to colorizing (and personalizing!) your desktop.
Aurora was written by Mike Pinkerton of glux() Software. The readme

think it is worth."

I. Brief Introduction To Key Tools
Key Tools is a program that makes typing at your Mac much
easier. By typing a special command key in any application
or the Finder, you can run any of the commands described below :
Button Keys - You may click a button in a dialog box by
holding down the command key and typing the first letter
of the button's name. This has the same effect as if you
had clicked on the button with the mouse. You can toggle
a radio button or checkbox by holding down the command
and shift keys at the same time and typing the first letter
of its name.
Type Date - Types the current date, as if you had typed
it on the keyboard. You may specify a long or short
format for the date.
Type Time - Types the current time, as if you had typed
it on the keyboard. You may specify whether to type the
seconds as well.
Echo - Retypes everything you typed since the last time you
clicked the mouse. This is great for repetitive editing.
For example, if you are editing a document in a word processor,
you can click at the mouse end of a word, delete three characters,
and type four new characters. Then you click the mouse on
another word and tell echo to repeat the editing sequence.
You may select any key to control any function and you may
require that the option, command, or shift keys be pressed
to call a function. For example, you may decide that the
time function will be run when you type the letter "t" while
holding down the option and command keys. Now, the time
function will run any time you type these keys. In the
Control Panel, Key Tools displays this key sequence as
"option-command-t", which means you must hold down the
command and option keys while at the same time typing the
letter "t".
II. What's New In This Version
Version 1.0.1 contains several important bug fixes. If you use
version 1.0, it is highly recommended that you upgrade to 1.0.1.
Selecting a button in a modal dialog with button keys now hilites
the button.
Button keys will no longer select a button in a modal dialog with
a command key if more than one button starts with that key. Key Tools
beeps to alert the user of that case.
Several bugs with button selection and keystroke processing were
fixed. Also, several bugs in the Control Panel were fixed.

Kill 'em all is an external written for use with OtherMenu which is a really cool utility written by James Walker. It is sort of a quick hack but seems to work just fine.
I finally got my dream and now have 12 megs of RAM in my Mac. This is great for opening up everything I need and never running out of memory. Unfortunately, after a huge downloading session (you know, you have Zterm, Compact Pro, MacCompress, TeachText,
MS Word, SitToCpt, DeSea all open at once) I can end up with a bunch of open applications. I can't empty the trash because all the folders have open files, etc. It is sort of a pain to go through and choose each application with the application menu an
d do a quit. What I want to do is just quit them all. Now with Kill 'em all, I can do this easily.
When envoked from the OtherMenu, Kill 'em all will kill all open applications except for the Finder. It should be used while the Finder (or other AppleEvent aware application) is the front most application. Initially it will ask you to confirm that each
application should be killed, but you can change in the settings dialog. Also in the setting dialog is the option of giving an exception for one certain application. This application must be identified by its creator (ie MSWD for Word, PJMM for THINK P
ascal). The settings dialog for OtherMenu externals can be accessed by holding down the shift key when choosing the external from OtherMenu.

This program updates Kiwi Software's excellent desktop pattern
program, Screenscapes, from version 1.0 to 1.0.1.
By the way, Kudos to Kiwi for their prompt and helpful response to
-> Modified all code to handle multiple menus, additional menu support
may be added easily now.
-> Improved error message handling
-> Changed startup ICON code, can now visually report 'no load'
-> Added 'cute' startup animation
-> Loading can now be bypassed with the shift key, or mouse button
-> Added a complete window drag handler, instead of the outline. This
will be controllable via the control panel soon
-> Desktop moves have been cleaned up. Now MenuDropper will sort
through all items dragged from the desktop, and give the Finder 2 sets of
instructions, one set for the items resident on the same volume as the
destination, and another for the rest. The option and command keys are
understood for these operations. The only caveat now is that if you drop
onto a folder in a hierarchical menu from the desktop the folder window
will open.To fix this would overly complicate the code and it is now the
only occurrence of it.
-> MenuDropper will now create a preferences file

Happy Dropping.

Menuette alters the appearance of menu titles in the menu bar (at the top of
your screen). Instead of the words that normally appear (such as File and
Edit), you'll see small icons representing these concepts. You can instantly
switch between icon and text views if you wish; if you do so, Menuette allows
you to choose your own font for menu display. It saves space, and makes your
Macintosh look really cool.
Icons for some popular programs are provided, and you can easily add more
icons by dropping new icon files (available on America Online) into a folder.
You can even create your own icon files using ResEdit. Icons are in color on
color Macs, but Menuette also works properly on black & white Macs (it's very
useful on Powerbooks, where menu bar space is tight).
Menuette comes with complete instructions (in fact, you can print a
twelve-page manual from within Menuette if you have a printer). In addition,
full technical support is available here on America Online in the Macintosh
Utilities forum, or by sending mail to "L Products."
Menuette is fully compatible with System 7.0, 7.0.1, 7.1, 32-bit addressing, and virtual memory. It takes just a few minutes to download - you'll be glad you did!

work with no problems (using system S-7.0) for 9 or 10 months. Under
low memory conditions, the system sometimes will revert to the WDEF in
ROM, but it does not seem to cause any harm.
This Compact Pro archive includes source code in Think C. There is
also code for a small application (Tester) that can be used to test any
changes in the source code before you try to install it in your system.
If anyone cares to add color bitmaps, it would be great...
I don't remember where I got it from in the first place, but the original
authors are credited in the source.

Subject: WDef III Version 3.1
Add NeXT-like windows to your Macintosh! This is Eric's WDEF taken to the
"NeXT" level of evolution, through a complete rewrite! This is NOT a "Hacked"
version. The NEW features include:
- Two versions of Windows! A "TrUE" representations of NeXT
Windows, as well as the improved, Original WDef III version!
- 3D buttons for "Close","Zoom" and "Grow"!
- Fully compatable with all documented Apple features!
- Full Color Support! Including System 7's Color Control Panel!
- An ALL NEW Control Panel! Allows the turning on and off of
WDef III, as well as selecting Window Type! Full documentation
is included within the Control Panel! WDef III may be disabled
durring Startup with the Shift Key or Mouse Button!
- For what it's worth, Balloon Help is fully supported!
- This version has been extensively beta tested on Mac Plus,
SE, Clasic, LC II, IIsi, IIci, IIcx, IIfx, Quadra 700 and Quadra
900 with Systems 6.0.5, 6.0.7, 7.0.1 and 7.1!
- Source Code! The source code for both WDEFs are included for
Think C, version 5.0!
WDef III is Now ShareWare! Due to the amount of time and energy being spent on
WDef III, and the amount intended to continue improving it, I'm asking a small
ShareWare fee of $5(US). This is to help defray the costs of making future
versions even better! A small E-Mail or postcard would still be greatly
welcome! It was those notes that caused the fruition of version 3.1! Keep
A new version of the Scroll2 control panel. Replaces the standard
Mac scrollbar arrows with a variety of optional designs. This version is
32-bit clean.

Subject: Scrolling CDEV
Here's a neat cdev that allows you to make functional use of the
thumbnail sliders on windows. Slide the thumbnail and the window
scrolls with it. Also controls acceleration of scrolling and whatnot.
Found on an Apple CD-ROM disc, no support provided, and, from what
I can tell in the read-me file, no restrictions for distribution
were made. Just don't bug apple for support. Works rather nicely
so far as I have been playing with it! Even seems to work in MS applications!
How about that for a surprise? :-)

SF Windows adds a popup menu to "Open" and "Save As..." dialogs. This menu contains the names of all the open windows in the Finder. When you select one of the windows from the menu, you will "Jump" to that folder.
This version will work with the System 7.1 Finder only. As new versions of the Finder are released, you can expect upgrades to SFWindows.
--------
Note for sumex-aim:
This program is an extension that requires system 7.1. I expect the lifetime of this program is approx. 6 months as people are often reluctant to upgrade to new system software (ie 7.2).

Shortcut Lives!!!
This file updates any previous version of Shortcut, Aladdin Systems'
extension to the Macintosh desktop, to ver. 1.5.3. This new version adds
several convenience features to the Open and Save dialogs, and improves
other aspects of the desktop interface, as described in the enclosed
documentation. All Shortcut users should upgrade to 1.5.3, since it also
corrects all known problems with previous versions, and adds System 7
compatibility. Disinfectant 3.2 showed this file as virus-free.

Subject: [*] Shutdown Delay 2.0.1
What Shutdown Delay basically does is setting up a dialog at
Restart/Shutdown time which gives the user four choices:
1. WAIT for the chosen command to be automatically completed
after a specified time interval;
2. CANCEL and smoothly return to the caller application;
3. RESTART (you can always turn a Shutdown in a Restart);
4. SHUT DOWN (turn power off or safe-shutdown alert as
usual);
5. FORCE QUIT attempts to return to the Finder (this can
sometimes recover from system crashes if you get to the
dialog after the restart button of the error alert).
This release is able to cooperate with Fabrizio Oddone's
DarkShutdown 1.1.1 (a DarkSide 4.0 module).

I am forwarding this message, courtesy of Thomas Lunde via Jim Bethin, because I found it
immensely helpful and I thought others might, too. I implemented everything except the CMD-U,
CMD-S,. and CMD-R (too many accidental restarts when trying to empty the trash with CMD-T) and they all work just as promised. BTW, I'm using 7.0b4 (I know, a dinosaur, but I haven't
been able to get my grubbies on any of the FC's) and ResEdit 2.1 (though _that_ shouldn't make
any difference). Now, maybe one of you MacGods out there can develop a template or, even
better, a resource editor, to make these things easier.
